This lantern is the first to have a more abstract approach to the surface decoration. It is hand made using the coiling technique and once leather hard, piercing is used to cut the holes for the light to shine through.  It is decorated with monochrome decorating slips and the texture of the clay is highlighted with the addition of iron oxide.  Selected areas are glazed with transparent glaze to catch the light, drawing attention to parts of the pattern. The lantern is fired very high to stoneware temperature and is frost-proof.
